A clown since 1977, Shirley is self-taught, having learned the art from other clowns, readings, and attendance at specialized conventions and conferences. Shirley has numerous awards in make-up and group skit competitions and has served as a judge for her peers at regional and national clown conventions. Shirley performs as "Bellibone" alone or as half of the team "Poppin' Korn". As part of the group "Clown Capers", she has been recognized for her years of work with Leukemia children in Connecticut. Knowledgeable and skilled in make-up application, prop construction, skit revision, storytelling, and basic clowning, she has led workshops and seminars in the United States and Canada. Educated in religious theory and practice, Shirley has lectured extensively on the subject of clown ministry. Shirley and partner, Mike Fixer, also write a prop column for "Laughmakers" magazine.
Shirley is a member of Clowns of America International, Sawdust Clowns Alley #66, and a former member of the Greater Hartford Clowns Alley #107.
"Bellibone" is a Whiteface clown with make-up of a white base with colors added for features. She appears in either a jumper or for the very feminine look, a dress; soft and sweet and sometimes a little dumb, she is never so dumb that she gets a pie in the face!
With two decades of clown experience, "Bellibone" appearances have included numerous parades, "First Night Hartford", hundreds of parties, "A Taste of Hartford", dozens of churches, "Talcott Tower Toot", plenty of picnics, television, and the circus!
At her workshop, "Make-up Design", you will learn how to use your facial features to enhance your make-up design and expressions. Bring a black make-up or grease pencil and a mirror.
